TekSpan – Modular steel frame alternative to welded steel frames

TekSpan Modular steel frame alternative to welded steel frames 2

Welded steel frames are a tried and tested product in the building services industry, and are used extensively to support large diameter pipework, heavy containment runs, and many other applications.

However, modular steel frames have numerous time, cost, time and performance benefits over their ageing counterpart, and in today’s high-pressure working environment, every time and cost saving that can be achieved should be given consideration.

What are modular steel frames?

Modular steel frame systems are profiles and fittings that connect together to form frame structures quickly and efficiently. They’re a modern solution to a traditional requirement, and use mechanical fixings to provide a deskilled, more efficient product without sacrificing integrity or performance.

What is TekSpan?

TekSpan is a modular steel frame system based on a hot dipped galvanised box frame and uses heavy-duty components fixed to the profiles using a unique T-bolt fastening system.

It allows contractors to build and install modular steel frames on-site with a strength comparable to welded steel frames with the added benefits of easy transportation and assembly.

TekSpan modular steel frames remove the need for on-site welding, not only reducing cost, compliance issues and complexity, but also enabling contractors to have greater flexibility in challenging environments. Situations where frames need levelling up are made significantly simpler with a modular steel frame, where a welded frame will need packing out, or worse – a frame rebuild.

Areas such as basement boiler rooms and risers pose significant risks and issues for welded steel frame installations and create challenges if a crane is needed to position cranes in place. With TekSpan, frames can be carried by hand or transported on a trolley to where they are needed and assembled using just an impact driver or torque wrench.

On average the purchase and installation cost of TekSpan modular steel frames is around 33% cheaper than using a traditional welded steel frame method.

Are modular steel frames as strong as welded steel frames?

Dependent on the profile of the welded steel frame, there’s effectively no reduction in the loading properties of an equivalent TekSpan frame. TekSpan T-bolt fixings are able to support up to 10kN of shear loading, providing a fixture strength that your install is unlikely to ever endanger.

Why are modular steel frames better than welded steel frames?

TekSpan modular steel frames remove the need for onsite welders, not only eliminating cost and complexity but also enabling contractors to have greater flexibility in challenging environments.

TekSpan is also fully Water Industry Mechanical and Electrical Specifications (WIMES) compliant ensuring that is the perfect modular steel frame system for UK Water Industry applications.

What can TekSpan be used for?

TekSpan is ideally suited for numerous demanding environments, for example:

  • Heating
  • Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC)
  • Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing
  • Fire sprinklers

How easy is TekSpan to assemble?

TekSpan is very easy to assemble requiring only one or two labourers and common hand tools such as an impact driver or a torque wrench to assemble.

TekSpan removes the need to drill, weld or galvanise frames meaning that the assembly and installation process is quick and easy.

Constructing framework often requires final adjustments once frames are on site. Typical steel frames require additional cutting and welding to get frames fit for their purpose, which causes additional time and material costs.

With TekSpan, levelling and adjustments are made easy thanks to the stepless slot design profile that offers millimetric adjustment.

Benefits of TekSpan modular steel frames

TekSpan offers huge flexibility in design with specially designed components that enable installers to create complex modular frames for every support scenario.

TekSpan also offers significant reductions in fabrication and labour costs due to the nature of its modular design.

Another benefit of modular steel frame design is the ability to make future adjustments and modifications. Where welded steel frames require on-site grinding and welding, modular systems allow for a simple bolt-on addition for variations or developments of the frame.

Arguably the greatest benefit of TekSpan is the short lead time; traditional steel frames need to be cut, welded, fabricated, shipped to galvanisers and then transported on site. With TekSpan, the frames are picked off the shelf and driven to site, with expert support from start to finish.so the contractor can quite literally order today and have the frame in-situ within 24 hours.

The cost, labour and time benefits of TekSpan modular steel frames

The logistics involved in transporting welded steel frames is enormous and inefficient.

Welded steel frames are often transported on HGVs during the entire process from production to delivery on site, requiring cranes and other heavy lifting equipment to move them into position.

TekSpan is both lighter and much easier to transport; frames can be transported from our Southampton warehouse to your site using our regular Bison van service. We can deliver from our warehouse to exactly where you need the goods on site without the need for extensive planning or on site resources.

Reliance on expensive welders and hot works permits are also removed by using TekSpan; all you need to assemble the frame is an impact driver.
